Schools Should Provide Teenage Parents with Daycare Essays -- Teen Pre

As times continually change, it is inevitable that statistics will change as well. For each student that fails to graduate from high school, another statistic comes about. An American pandemic that forever seems to be looming on the horizon is the issue of puerile parenting and pregnancies. According to an article pertaining to teen pregnancies compiled from teenhelp.com, the United States has been deemed the leading nation for teenaged pregnancies in the occidental industrialized world. Due to this statistic, it is important to evaluate what can be done to set up teenage parents for success, as well as what can be done for children born in to young families. In an article on teenage parenting compiled by Linda Mangel, it is said that nearly seventy percent of teenage mothers do not complete their secondary education, and because of this, it becomes evident that a solution is crucial. Secondary schools would benefit from considering the implementation of daycare systems in order to increase the graduation tempo for teen parents. The debate as to whether or not daycares are appropriate for high schools poses an important question does the placing of daycare centers in secondary schools condone teenage pregnancies? In an online journal obtained from MSNBC, it is argued that high school daycare centers do not effectively convey the ins and outs of teenage parenthood, and therefore appear to condone the concept of teenage pregnancies. The reality of this counterargument, though, is that the daycare centers exist solely to provide an ideal environment for the parent and child. As long as these daycare centers are not announce and put out in plain sight for all to see, it does not appear tha... ... Chen, Grace. Role of Women in Uzbekistan Essay -- essays research papers

Role of Women in UzbekistanWomens roles are not the same in different cultures. Most important is that women in Uzbekistan, where the population of Muslim people were from 50 % up to 70 %, made the big progress in eighty years. From that time women started to become more free in education, marriage, and fashion than they used to be eighty years ago. The education has also changed since the 1910s. In the 1910s girls had separate schools from boys, and they could only get education in middle-schools not qualifying anywhere further in level of study. A lot of girls couldnt attend the schools at all. In the history books says that each class had about volt to ten girls, half of the girls stayed at home with their family or grandparents. Now we have a lot of schools and they are not separated. Today all Muslim girls and boys go to same schools together with all other students. They also can go farther in level of study. A lot of Muslim girls and women go to university after High School and earning degrees and becoming scientists, writers, musicians, teachers and simply excellent mothers. It is a really big change for women. I think I know why they did this changes, its because they precious to be more educated and be equal to men. Marriage has also changed a lot. Since, he could not do the oppressors demand the victim will not go to school because he is afraid to be beaten up. These findings have promote the researchers to conduct a further study in a specific place where such cases are often occurring, the school. In relation to our study, Ken Seeley, EdD et al. (2009) of the national Center for School Engagement conducted a research on equal victimization or also know as Bullying. Their study tells that bullying is not direct cause of students absenteeism or low school achievement. However, Bullying results in the victim becoming less engaged in school and cease care classes. Seeley et.al focused on the effects and ultimate outcomes of bullying not just whether raw bullying numbers decrease, but whether the ever-present victims of bullying go on to college or to crime.Their research was also designed to assess the role of victimization frequency and intensity in determining how much school a student misses. Additionally, their study reveals a connection between bu llying and school engagement. Bullying had a negative impact with school engagement, so the more a student was victimized, the less the student was engaged at school. The authors concluded that bullying greatly influences the students engagement in school that the more occurrence of peer victimization the less the student attend his/her class.Statement of the ProblemWhat does bullying really give? For the questionnaires used in the survey, the researchers adapt the instrument known as Likert Scale. Moreover, the researchers discuss the statistical treatment on how the students respond in the survey questionnaires.Since Bullyi ng involves human behavior which needs psychological explanation, the researchers usage Descriptive-Status Method in tackling this topic. This method will help the researchers to easily obtain answers and solutions to the problem. Moreover, the method will help the researchers to make a more understandable and manageable betterment to the topic as it will provide clearer explanations to the target aspects of the study. This method will aid the readers to easily comprehend the data and information discussed in the study.Samples and Sampling ProceduresThe researchers employ Purposive Sampling design since it is most suitable with the research. Purposive Sampling design, also known as judgmental, selective or subjective sampling, is a lineament of non-probability sampling technique. Non-probability sampling focuses on sampling techniques where the units that are investigated are based on the judgment of the researcher. Moreover, the researchers used the Slovins Formula to get the Nu mber of Respondents allot in each year level. Table 1 The Total Population of Different levels of the High School Students of the College of the Immaculate Conception and the Number of Respondents computed using Slovins Formula. Year Level Total Population(Number of Students)Data Gathering ProceduresThe researchers composed questionnaires whereby the respondents are asked to answer a set of questions by means of rating depending on their level of agreement or disagreement. The questions concern the effects of bullying in every students studies. The researchers enquire answers to come up with a conclusion regarding to the study. The questionnaires are distributed to the different year levels of respondents.Description of the InstrumentIn this study, the researchers used the questionnaire made of a Likert Scale to gather necessary data and information. The photographic plate is named after its inventor, a psychologist named Rensis Likert. Likert Scale is also known as rating scale t hat the respondents specify their level of agreement or disagreement on a symmetric agree-disagree scale for a series of statements. Thus, the scale captures the intensity of the students feeling for a given item.Construction and Validation of the InstrumentsThe researchers have undergone brainstorming and revisions in order to have a final survey. The researchers used a survey as the instrument of the study .Suggestions and comments were raised by the English critics and Statistician upon seeing the pen of the survey. However the instrument undergone a lot of revisions and the researchers took the suggestions of the English critics for the researchers to have an official instrument. The instrument was finalized and polished by the researchers thus the researchers reproduce the instrument and distributed upon the signal of the Research Adviser.Administration of the InstrumentAfter the instrument has been approved by the experts, the researchers went through the reproduction of the questionnaires.ConclusionsIn light of the above summary and findings, the following conclusions were drawn 1. According to the respondents of this study, most of them are victims of bullying. Almost all of them are suffering from bullying and didnt have the confidence to view the bullies. Based on the data gathered by the researchers, 69% respondents attest that they sometimes experience bullying in the school. As a result they almost lose all of their confidence in themselves but luckily there was God and their family to support them.2. It only showed that most of the respondents moved on and the bullying was just a challenge, trial and inspiration to empathize something more about life. It gave them a lesson in protecting and maintaining their bravery within themselves because it was a gift from God. And we must be ready at all times for such obstacles in life that might happen in the future.3. We Filipinos still carry the good attitude of our ancestors which is shown a lot of t imes throughout our history. So instead of bullying others, how about we use this attitude to be united again not only within our city but also in the whole country.4. The victims used a lot of strength to move on from the challenging event happened in their lives. For them, it was very hard to move on and to block up the tragedy they experienced because it almost destroyed their future but with the help of God, most of the victims realized that they still need to move on and face the world to continue their lives and be thankful for surviving such event and their faith in God was strongly developed.5. The lessons given by this research was to open the eyeball of the victims who are suffering from this and to attend the different things to do to protect themselves. We must be prepared and be aware enough to such things as bullying. Some victims said that they realized the importance of not only themselves but also their family because they are the only ones left and served as in spiration to move on from the trials in life.6. The victims have learned a lot and they have some suggestions to the school, to the community and to others. To the school, they should voice out the needs of the victims of the bullying. For the community and to others, they wanted to emphasize the importance of the family, to be strong, and faced the trials in life and do not give up. The victims did not lose hope to survive the battle because they believe in God and they request to God. We must never forget God and ask for His goodness to guide and gives us strength in the trails we are facing.7. No matter what end of the bullying we are on, we need to make sure that we are doing our part to prevent and stop this. Bullying is a serious matter, whether we like it or not. If we do not think that we can handle the situation on our own, there is no harm in asking for help. We can find help in a variety of places, even within our own family. RecommendationsThese are some of the research ers recommendations after the findings and conclusions were made 1. Bullying is a serious problem that can dramatically cloak the ability of students to progress academically and socially. A comprehensive intervention plan that involves all students, parents, and school staff is required to ensure that all students can learn in a safe and fear-free environment. 2. Do not be a coward and try to face the challenges in our life. 3. Love ourselves and show the bullies that we have the strength to face them before its too late. 4. Instead of getting a revenge on the bully, try to show them that youre not affected by this because the real weaklings here are the bullies.5. Always be prepared through learning the different things to do when such difficulties happen in the future. 6. The guidance counselor and the Office of the Student Affairs must take action immediately when such event happens. 7. Through trials we face in life, do not forget to have faith in God and ask for His guidance, for our family to be always safe and secure. Lastly, be thankful for the life that He gave us. 8. The Government should take action to this problem by promoting an anti-bullying program not only to schools but also to our fellow countrymen.

How far were southerners to blame for the civil war? Essay

During and for years after the state of play offfare, Northerners blamed southerlyerners and to the southerners blamed Northerners for starting the war. With hindsight today, it is easy to dish out blame and easiest to point the leaf at the southern. After all it was the atomic number 16ern states that seceded from the compass north, and it was obvious to m some(prenominal) Southerners at the time, and to most Northerners that the result of such secession would be war. It was the Confederates that fired the first shots of the war at Fort Sumter in April 1861, and in doing so they provoked a conflict that would leave one in four white adult anthropoid southerners dead, the Souths economy devastated and slavery, the peculiar institution they fought to defend, abolished. However because slavery is seen today to be such a morally and ethically wrong and monstrous thing, peoples views can be blurred, leading them to side automatically with the North. There were of course many ev ents that fur at that placed Americas sectionalism and eventually conduct to the civil war, most of which blame can be divided equally. It is therefore necessary to be objective and take each into account, concluding perhaps that the South was not entirely to blame for the civil war, just as Germany was not entirely to blame for the first world war.The Missouri engagement was the first of events that caused variant between North and South. In 1819 the territory of Missouri applied to become a state in the union, it was settled mainly by Southerners and ten percent of its population were black slaves. Its constitution therefore would make Missouri a slave state. This would cause imbalance in the Senate whereby the South would slang a majority, so congressman Tallmadge from New York proposed that Missouri should only be allowed to join the union if it would abolish slavery. This issue was debated across the country the South saw Tallmadges design as an attack on their political power. In the House of Representatives the North already had a large majority and if any bare-assed states were to be free, any of the Souths wishes could be ignored in both houses. In 1820 a compromise was do whereby Missouri was made a slave state, and Maine was made a free state, thus keeping the balance in the Senate. Also there were to be no slaves above the line of 36 30 latitude. This dispute to an extent can be blamed on the North, as it was Tallmadges statement that sparked off tension and Southern determination to defend slavery. The North could have been satisfied with their majority in the House of Representatives and just allowed Missouri to be a slave state, knowing that soon other states would arise possibly absent to be free. The 1828 Nullification Crisis was a cause of further sectionalism that was not directly about slavery it was instead focused on state rights versus federal rights. social intercourse proposed to raise import duties making foreign goods more e xpensive. This would protect industry in the North as consumers would buy American made goods, solely it would hurt the South as they relied heavily on cotton trade with Great Britain. The South saw this as another attack from the North, so Senator Calhoun from South Carolina declared that if a state felt the Federal Government was abusing its power, that state could nullify or ignore any measure or process it disagreed with. He also said that any state had the right to secede. In 1832 South Carolina ignored the new import duties and President Jackson threatened to localize in troops. Eventually they backed down and excepted a lower set of duties. This escapade and Calhouns statement about secession threatened the very origination of the union. Blame for this can fall on both the North for selfishly looking after their interests without regard for the South, and on the South for supporting Calhouns head of secession which threatened to tear apart the country at such an early stag e.Next came the dispute over atomic number 20 and New Mexico. In 1846 the States won a war against Mexico and gained the lands of California and New Mexico. Congressman Wilmot from Pennsylvania proposed that slavery should be banned in all land taken from Mexico. The South opposed Wilmots proviso, as according to the Missouri compromise, California should be part free and part slave. However the climate of California and New Mexico was repugnant for cotton growth and it was unlikely that slavery would expand that far west anyway, so there was no need for Wilmot to say what he did. By go-ahead his mouth, Wilmot opened an old wound, making the South firmer in their defense of slavery. Calhoun reiterated his views on secession in his doctrine and tension grew with the Californian gold rush. Thousands rushed to California and its settlers formed a constitution that banned slavery. Before it could be a state Congress had to approve the constitution. The Southern states opposed it and t he break up of the union was on the horizon once again. As usual a compromise was reached. In 1850 California became a free state but a new harsh Fugitive Slave law was introduced, meaning if a slave escaped to a free state, men could hunt the slave down across the borders and bring him back. The bitterness and tension here can be blamed on both the North and South. The North because Wilmot and his supporters were willing to blatantly go against the 1820 compromise, and the South as they would not simply accept the wishes of the Californian people. The dispute over Kansas and Nebraska is perhaps the best example where both Northerners and Southerners were to blame for what happened. In 1854 Senator Douglas from Illinois proposed a bill to form two new territories, Kansas and Nebraska, in order to buy land to build a transcontinental railroad. Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska act but it was remaining for the inhabitants of the territories to decide for or against slavery. Nebraska was unsuitable for slavery but Kansas wasnt. So, despite the fact that Kansas was above 36 30 latitude, slave owners from Missouri moved in, in an attempt to make Kansas a slave state. Similarly so did abolitionists from the North. Both groups set up governments and sought approval from Congress. Violence followed in a war lasting several years which was nicknamed Bleeding Kansas Eventually abolitionist settlers outnumbered the slavers and in 1861 Kansas became a free state. In this case both sections were as bad as each other with their childish quarrels and fights. So who really was to blame for the Civil war? From the above-mentioned factors, which are only a few of many, you could conclude that both Northerners and Southerners were equally responsible. However the most important factor as mentioned in the beginning is the fact that the Southern States seceded. They did not have to, but they did.In 1861 there was no immediate threat to slavery, Lincoln said when he was elected tha t he would not interfere with slavery in states where it was already established. He mentation it would take a hundred years or more before slavery would fade away, and considering the Republicans did not have a majority in Congress in 1860, there was little Lincoln could do to threaten slavery.Despite this, Southern politicians, representing the wishes of their constituents, acted irrationally and established an independent Southern nation, believing they were protecting themselves from the pettishness of the North. Most Southerners knew that in doing so they would start a war and some realized at the time the full extent of their mistake. They knew they would start a war and they realized they would lose. The North was far more industrialized and stronger in numbers of men and it was very likely that they would win. Jonathan Worth from North Carolina said in flood 1861 I think the South is committing suicide, but my lot is cast with the South and being unable to manage the ship , I intend to face the breakers manly and go down with my companionsIf all Southerners had realized their foolishness a lot of bloodshed could have been avoided. However a mass delusion seemed to effect the South, they believed they had to fight to survive. Southerners picked the fight they fired first and were made to lie in the grave they dug for themselves.

Google Inc. Essay

Google Inc. began in 1996 as the brainchild of two bright computer science grad students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. These two intellectually gifted men met in 1995 at Stanford University where they were doing their PhDs. During their time together at Stanford, both came up with creative ways of finding and organizing large amounts of data. After that, Brin and Page developed a technology called PageRank that enabled them to conk out a particular websites significance. The idea of a search engine occurred to Brin and Page after they came up with the idea for PageRank. The search engine was based on the on the same algorithm that PageRank used, but would be much more effective at obtaining better and accurate results than existing search engines. The idea curtly became the world famous search engine simply known as Google that was launched on September 15, 1997. Brin and Pages company was formally incorporated on September 4, 1998 at an acquaintances garage in Menlo Park, Californi a. Google, a play on words, received its name from googol, the mathematical equivalent of the number unrivaled followed by a hundred zeros.Naming the company Google was seen by both Brin and Page as the perfect way to reflect their original mission to work up the worlds information and make it universally accessible and useful. Over the years, Google has become so popular that is has gained a vast number of pursuit who liked its simple design and useful results. In 2000, Google began selling text-based advertisements associated with search keywords in order to maintain an uncluttered page design so that revivify is maximized when loading a page. Their innovative advertising system, comprised of its AdWords and AdSense products, is so successful that 99% of their revenue is derived from it. However, the technological industry demands constant innovation and Googles strong counselling on continuous improvement is reflected in the companys ever expanding line of innovative service s and products that includes webmail (Gmail), blogging (Blogger), and interactive maps (Google Maps). Googles strong organizational socialisation that includes values such as creativity, simplicity and innovation plays a huge role in their tremendous success and gives them a huge competitive reinforcement over their rivals in the search engine market.

Only the death of James, intelligence of Zebedee is described in the New Testament, and the details of the other deaths are the subject of pious legends of varying authenticity. In around cases there is near unanimity in the tradition, and in other cases, there are widely varying and inconsistent accounts. Judas Iscariot, originally one of the xii, died during Jesus trial.Matthew 275 says that he hanged himself, and Acts 118 says that he fell, flare up open, and his bowels gushed out. Matthias was elected to take his place as one of the Twelve. According to Christian tradition Original Twelve picked by Jesus Peter, crucified upside-down in Rome c. AD 64. Adolescent Rebellion Essay

Adolescents go to extreme measures to find their identity, often times rebelling to prove that they are their admit people. Rebelling is a way for the adolescent to prove their independence, which makes reek in hucks case. Rebelling can range from not obeying parents to making friends with undesirable characters to completely going against the norms of the orderliness. Hucks home life and education fuel his desire to rebel especially since he has trouble adapting to society, similar to Holden Caulfield, always looking for ways to be different and often times ticklish and un intellectualable. The adolescent years are marked by the search for personal identity and finally experiencing the real world as a maturing adult. With this cosmos said, the reason adolescents such as Huck rebel is because they have trouble accepting the norms of society and refuse to conform. In the first novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Author Mark orthodontic braces uses this degree to show th e immorality of society in the 1800s. To convey this message, he uses his main character, a rebellious adolescent named Huck Finn.Huck has a very difficult time accepting the ways of society and refuses to let his guardians, The Widow Douglas, Miss Watson, as well as many other characters attempt to civilize him. Huck rebels against many things such as religion, education, cleanliness, and mannerisms. He even rebels against the main principle of society at the time which is slavery. He befriends a slave named Jim and is given the extract of following societys rules and turning him in or treating him as an equal and assisting him to freedom.Mark Twain uses this novel to address many issues in society in the 1800s, exclusively mainly slavery and prejudice. I consider this novel teaches morals and lessons involving children and racial discrimination today. In the essay titled, The Controversy over head for the hills Does Huckleberry Finn Combat or Reinforce Racism, critic Julius Les ter goes to the extent of saying that Mark Twains writings are ethically dangerous and claims that the author is in fact somewhat racist. He believes that Mark Twain does not take slavery seriously and therefore African Americans. He explains how Twain makes a burlesque of Jim, degrading him through and throughout the novel through the use of Huck Finn. (356) Many critics like Lester, imply many negative claims against Twain but I believe this accusation is irrelevant because Twain is not using Huck Finn to degrade Jim, he is in fact using him as a symbol of whiteness to the immorality of society. Huck is at that age where he is unaware of the difference between right and wrong but when he is faced with a consider as complex as discrimination he takes his own path instead of following societys regulations.Like a toddler at the playground, when a child of different color or race approaches them to play, they dont discriminate they sense a friendly individual and befriend them. Twai n allows his character to rebel against the prejudice society, in order to call on the carpet awareness and address the issue of racism. The other criticisms we have read and discussed this semester, critique and pin backsheesh any flaw possible of criticism in each of the novels. Some criticisms aimed towards one novel can even apply to others. In Brivics The oppositive Structure of Joyces Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, the author states, Psychoanalysis shows how the images that weave through Portrait are linked by unconscious motivation to form a dynamic structure. Within this structure Stephen Dedalus develops his thinking around a central principle of connection with the world through alienation. And the conflicts and transformations in the structure enact opposing views by which Joyce both supports and condemns Stephen (279). This quote is interesting because it applies to two of the novels characters we have been introduced to, both Portraits alter ego,Stephen Dedalus , and The backstop in the Ryes Holden Caulfield, the society outcast looking for a path in life. Stephen and Holden both encounter many similar situations, where they find themselves in search of happiness and comfort. J. D Salinger puppets the protagonist of Holden Caulfield to verbally assault almost all(prenominal) institution and character he encounters during his transition from childhood to adulthood.Deeply mentally and emotionally disturbed, Holden resists conformity to every vice, failing out of four preparatory schools, lying about countless details to add excitement to his anticlimactic life, and stereotyping every individual he encounters and labeling them phony, proving Holden to be the most superficial of all the characters. Holdens opinionated personality allows him to openly pass judgment and portray the merciful of behavior he thinks contributes toward the corrupted, indecent world he is apart of. Holden believes he must be a comfortor of innocence he must encour age Phobe and all hildren from the cruel reality of how the world operates. He is The Catcher in the Rye, based off a poem, where he will catch the children and protect them as they fall off the cliff of childhood into the reality of adulthood, it is possible Holden Caulfield is consumed by the idea of sex, Holden engages in several contradicting actions, he solicits a prostitute but refuses to sleep with her, yearns for the affection or companionship of another girl but distances and degrades himself when he feels exposed, and repeatedly calls Jane but hangs up before speaking with her.J. D Salinger uses Holden to raise the issues of sexuality, sexual promiscuity, and homosexuality several times throughout the novel. In Daisy Miller, Author Henry James discusses the morals between the Americans and the Europeans and the involvement of women in the time linguistic context of the novel. Daisy Miller, the main character, is one of the main mysteries throughout the novel as the author causes the reader to wonder whether she is really a nice girl or not. Daisy is young, wealthy, piquant American girl who travels through Europe with her family. With a strange mixture of personality traits ranging from high spirited and independent to ignorant and shallow, Daisy goes on an adventure that is illustrated to explain the subtext involving the differences in American and European values. The author directs the audience towards the gender roles in society and how women of this time setting were at a much higher affable standard. Women at this time were controlled with a sexist set of rules appointed by government officials according to gender. As you get deeper into the novel, you find out that Daisy is not as innocent as she seems she is very rebellious.Through this rebellion, the author addresses sexist tendencies and the pride of American womanhood and freedom despite social constraints. The reasons why adolescents rebel transfigure from person to person yet they h old one thing in common. It is to prove their independence as they disagree with how they should conform to society. Whether people are shammer or the norms of the society, like slavery and racism, are wrong, adolescents find a way to be difficult in a sense to prove they have their own identity and they are independent. Each of the authors we have read over the course of the semester, Twain, Joyce, Salinger, and James took the risk of breaking the rules with their words in order to convey their messages to a large-scale audience. The adolescent years are marked by the search for personal identity and finally experiencing the real world as a maturing adult. With this being said, the reason adolescents such as Huck rebel is because they have trouble accepting the norms of society and refuse to conform.

Cute in Japanese Culture

The progress of dodgyness in Japanese culture emerged in the 1970s as deviate of a new style of writing. Many teenage girls began to write laterally using mechanical pencils. These pencils produced very fine lines, as opposed to traditional Japanese writing that varied in onerousness and was vertical. Also, the girls would write in big, round characters and they added little pictures to their writing, such as hearts, stars, smiley faces, and letters of the Latin alphabet. These pictures would be inserted arbitrarily and made the writing very hard to read.As a result, this writing style caused a lot of competition and was banned in many schools. During the 1980s, however, this new cute writing was adopted by magazines and comics and was put onto package and advertising. From 19841986, Yamane Kazuma studied the development of cute handwriting, which he called Anomalous Female Teenage Handwriting, in depth. Although it was commonly panorama that the writing style was something that teenagers had picked up from comics, he found that teenagers had come up with the style themselves, as part of an underground movement.Later, cute handwriting became associated with acting childishly and using infantile slang words. Because of this growing trend, companies such as Sanrio came out with merchandise like Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty was an immediate success and the compulsion with cute continued to progress in other beas as well. The 1980s also saw the rise of cute idols, such as Seiko Matsuda, who is largely credited with popularizing the trend. Women began to emulate Seiko Matsuda and her cute fashion style and mannerisms, which emphasize the helplessness and innocence of young girls. 4 No longer limited to teenagers, however, the spread of making things as cute as possible, even common household items, was embraced by people of all ages. Now there are airplanes painted with Pikachu on the side, and each of Japans 47 prefectures, the Tokyo police, and even the p ublic broadcaster NHK all have their own cute mascots. Currently, Sanrios line of much than 50 characters takes in more than $1 billion a year and it remains the most successful company to capitalize on the cute trend

Environmental Conflicts In Literature

Conflicts are a very prominent element in literature. If you were to look up the dictionary definition of conflict, you would take care that it is a struggle, controversy, or fight. Conflicts female genital organ take many forms, and each has its own place in literature. environmental conflicts are certainly one of the more recognized and appreciated types of conflicts. They are easy to identify, understand, and analyze. An environment can be described as ones surroundings, so logically, an environmental conflict is a conflict with ones surroundings. Environmental conflicts rival man against a wideer power, and it is unsure what will happen next.Throughout good literature, a vast drift of environmental conflicts can be found. Let us take a look at Leiningen Versus the Ants, by Carl Stephenson. In this story, environmental conflicts are exceedingly prevalent. In fact, the entire story is built upon the act of immortal that Leiningen faces. A twenty square mile army of ants thre atens Leiningens plantation and his life. The ants prove to be a redoubted opponent, even for a man of such cunning as Leiningen. They represent the power and unpredictability of naturea meliorate example of an environmental conflict. Not all environmental conflicts are huge, apocalyptic, catastrophic events. They can be as simple or commonplace as a tree falling. Such is the case in The Interlopers, by Saki. Saki recognizes the power of nature, and makes use of something so unimportant as a fallen tree to pickle Ulrich and Georg beneath it, and dramatically alter the course of the entire story. Not only that, but at the last of the story, Saki uses wolves to change the direction of the story once more, and this time he creates some irony as well.In almost all cases, the environment does triumph over man in some flair or another. To Build a Fire, by Jack London is a prime example of this occurrent to a large extent. A man and his dog are lost in the wilderness at sub-zero tempe ratures, and he is not only involved in an environmental conflict, but a struggle to live. ultimately the man dies of hypothermia. Again, this is another instance that illustrates the power that nature has over us. Ironically, (as if to drive the point home) the mans dog survives. It is synthetic rubber to say that environmental conflicts are a truly wonderful and important addition to the literary world. They mother the reader a sense of awe toward nature and its power. We cannot predict what nature will do, nor can we pass over its supremacy. Because of this, environmental conflicts are often more captivating and suspenseful than other types, and we find a great deal of enjoyment and entertainment from them.

Working Conditions of the Meat Industry

Recognition of the inherent dignity and of be and inalienable rights of exclusively members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security department of person. These few words pretty much sums up the mission of the Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international non-governmental plaque whose main focus is to ensure the wellbeing and the inherent rights to life that all human beings atomic number 18 entitle to.By using means such as the media for example, Human Rights Watch sets out to not sole(prenominal) insure that all human beings live their lives with dignity but to also bring to justice those who, through merciless dictatorships, suppress the happiness and basic human rights of their commonwealth. The purpose of this paper is to discuss my opinion on whether or not I agree with certain changes recommended by the HRW in regards to work pencil eraser when it comes to immigrant workers. I will provide my opinion and consider some of the utilitarian and deontological considerations. In 1906, Upton Sinclairs novel The Jungle reveal harrowing conditions inside Americas fondness packing plants and initiated a period of transformation in the nations meat industry. The virtuous Food and Drug Act and the Federal Meat Inspection Act were both passed later that year, and trade union movement organizations slowly began to improve the conditions under which the countrys meat packers toiled. But some critics say Americas meat championship has been in decline for decades and that the poor conditions found in slaughterhouses and packing facilities today argon often little expose than those described by Sinclair. The Human Rights Watch was founded in 1978 as Helsinki Watch to support and shelter individual dissidents and independent citizen groups in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The aim was to defend the rights of strangled writers, scholars, and intellectua ls, and to ensure that their governments complied with the 1975 Helsinki Accords, which, among other things, affirmed citizens rights to monitor the human rights practices of their own governments. The first expansion came in 1981 when Americas Watch was established to demonstrate that human rights standards are universal and should be applied equally to governments of all political stripes. The HRW group investigated the meat and poultry industrys unfair, unethical and inhumane practices and found that things intrinsic to be changed. HRW recommended an assortment of things to change to include new laws and policies should ensure respect for the human rights of immigrant workers, whatever their intelligent status.Immigrants should have the same study protections as non-immigrants, including coverage under fair repel standards and other labor laws, and the same remedies when their rights are violated and New federal and state laws should reduce line speed in meat and poultry plan ts and establish new ergonomics standards to reduce repetitive stress injuries. Health and safety authorities should apply stronger enforcement measures. States should develop stronger worker compensation laws and enforcement mechanisms. These changes were recommended because there is a massive influx of immigrant workers in the meat and poultry plants around the country. Also a significant number of these workers are unaware of their workplace rights. Many of these workers and their family are also undocumented and dont want to draw attention to themselves. Because of their undocumented status, this pr essences workers from seeking protection for their rights as workers from government authorities. The meat and poultry industry recedes advantage of these fears and use it to their advantage. They playact on the fears of these undocumented workers to keep them in abusive conditions that violate basic human rights and labor rights. regardless of someone legal status, no one deserves to work in unsafe filthy conditions. I do agree with the changes that the HRW put forth. I have to agree that the illegal and some legal immigrant population are unfairly taken advantage of. The meat and poultry industry has the duty to protect and provide a safe working environment for their workers and also provide for damages or injury in the event of it happening regardless of legal status. Most of the nations 17. 7 million immigrant workers toil, like those who preceded them, in jobs that native-born Americans disdain to do. They work as meatpackers, hotel maids, hamburger flippers, waiters, gardeners, seamstresses, fruit and vegetable pickers, and construction hands. John Gay, a lobbyist for the American Hotel & inhabit Association, says there are places in this country where we wouldnt survive without immigrants, which is pressing Congress to allow more essential workers into the United States. The trend is to push our own children into college to be rocket scientists or com puter programmers. But who is sack to do these hard jobs that we have? Who is going to change bedpans in a nursing home? Or change beds in hotels? Jobs in poultry plants across the South, once held almost exclusively by American blacks, are now dominated by Mexican immigrants. Textile plants run largely on the labors of Hispanic workers. In the Kentucky coal fields, mining companies are considering recruiting miners from the Ukraine. From a Utilitarian perspective, requiring meat packing lines to slow vote out will increase man hours and reduce productivity. If chain speeds were legislatively mandated to be reduce by 25 %, the same plants which currently lack management commitment to safe foods would continue to produce the same add up of contaminated food as it did prior to the forced reduction. The management would not be inclined to receive changes which would cost money if they are losing money because of decreased production due to the reduction of the speed lines. The meat and poultry industry does not promise rose-garden workplaces, nor should it be expected of them. OSHA offered special incentives to meat packers who entered into voluntary agreements with the chest of drawers to lessen their ergonomic hazards. While they would still be subject to OSHA inspections, they would not be cited or penalized on ergonomic grounds. From a deontological stance, food safety is compromised when production lines move too quickly for its line workers to by rights assess risks. Working in the meat and poultry industry is a difficult job that I stated before most Americans would not do.It is the meat packing companies duty to ensure our foods and the workers who process them are as safe as they can be. If speed lines were reduced, health risks to employees will reduced and our meats can be properly assessed thus resulting in less contaminated meats devising their way to out grocery stores. In conclusion it is obvious to see that rights and responsibilities were n ot carried out by the meatpacking industry. They were greed driven business who poisoned for profit as President Roosevelt said. The meatpackers had a right to make their product but did not take the responsibility to do it in a manner that was safe for the workers and the consumer. Thanks to the Human Rights Watch and people like Upton Sinclair and Theodore Roosevelt who was sickened after reading an advance copy of Sinclairs book called upon congress to pass a law that established the Food and Drug Administration. The meat industry today takes the responsibility in making working conditions safer and producing meat safer for the consumer.ReferencesBlackwell, Jon. 1906 Rumble over The Jungle, retrieved 15 Jun 2011 from http//www.capitalcentury.com/1906.html Meatpacking in the U.S. Still a Jungle Out There? Research Methods CASE5 Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Methods CASE5 - Research Paper ExampleThe data achieved was utilise to measure the level of achievement in the cardinal groups. Another measure comprised the final grades of the students in the scarper depicted by percentage scores.A paired sample t test was used to view the achievements in the two groups. In addition, differences in pre post check intos was examined to get the differences based on formats of teaching in single taught and team taught groups, while similarly controlling the demographic variables in twain the sections using MANCOVA.The grades of the two groups were also examined based on the format of teaching by use of independent t-test. Differences in pre-post for the examined factors from the survey of the two teams were analyzed. The results showed a crucial increase in interrogation and statistics basis. However, there were no any significant differences for the other two variables. The pre-post differences for the survey factors that are based on format o f teaching in both the single and team taught groups when demographic variables are controlled showed that there was a significant difference between work, research and statistics. The single taught students showed an increase in pre post relationship between course materials and work. The team taught group showed a pre post decline in the relationship between course materials and work.(Sesser 2012) says that the results indicate no significant interactions statistically exist in opinion factors and demographic variables. When the final grade is used to gauge the differences in do of this two type of learning, there is a significant variance between single taught and team taught groups. police squad taught students are observed to attain higher course grades than those of the students in solo taught groups. The standard deviation in the statistics obtained in the two groups was also examined. (Hill 2005) says that the variance in the team taught is always less than

The Curse of her Beauty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The Curse of her Beauty - Essay ExampleThe womans contradictory appearing is conveyed through a serial of similes. She is old as ocean yet young as mornings. In spite of the womans contradictory appearance (which seems to foreshadow ambiguity), the observer takes great delight in her.Roach personifies the beauty of the stain through the womans characteristics (That dictum beauty walk on the wind and the sea). He speaks of nothing more about the woman early(a) than her physical beauty. Much like the poet, tourist know of nothing more than what meets their eyes (the rural areas physical beauty), which is eq to the womans physical appearance. The Caribbean is known to attract tourists with its lush vegetation and mild climate. However, Roach points out the lands deceptive subjugation of the lands beauty. In fact, the lands beauty taints its true image. Rather than seeing the land for what it truly is (a place enduring the black lashing of the sea spray), the poet is tantalized and shake up by kisses that cause him to envision a beautiful goddess (Love tinted that shore). As he realizes the goddesss true repulsive side, the poet finds out that there is more than what meets the eye.Reality sobers the poet. He is no longer intoxicated by the beauty of the land. ... In The Odyssey by Homer, Sirens coaxd sailors with their sweet hypnotic songs. Their songs detracted sailors from their careful journeys and caused them to crash their ships into the rocks. In its efforts to lure and trap unwary observers, the land produces an attractive woman who is similar to the sirens. In essence, the woman is the land. Normally, Roach uses the land as a metaphor for the struggle between Eurocentric hegemony (dominance) and Caribbean independence (Jennings 25). The evidence of dominance is shown in the first stanza. The trees are symbolic of the Caribbean people who endured much abuse from the Europeans (lashing sea spray) but remained strong. As an island-dweller who was f orced to conform to European studies (Breiner 113), Roach uses examples from his studies (the siren coast deceptive Sirens from Homers Odyssey). In addition, Roach struggles with the personal identity of the land (shown in the ambivalent view of the woman or land). In doing so, he denounces the history of the land while acknowledging its undeniable beauty and his love for it. In the end, the poem makes a full circle (back to the beginning) where the he reflects on the devastatingly true image of the shore. The only difference now is that remnants of his love accompany the brutalities of the lashing sea spray.Works CitedBreiner, Laurence A. An Introduction to West Indian Poetry. Structural Fires and Structural Failures Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Structural Fires and Structural Failures - Essay ExampleEfforts started in 1980 to keep track of fires and chance upon measures to reduce structural failures and after three decades, the damages in casualties as well as carryplane propeller reduced by almost fifty percent. Structures were sort into different types to better access the parameters and predict the quantify the fire takes to consume the structure. This classification also gives firefighters better assessment to fight or counter fires. The promote by which fires spread throughout the structure depends on three major factors oxygen source, fuel and the rouse source. Oxygen is necessary for impatient and air is the primary source, the national of the structure provides fuel source for burning and different components burn with different speeds, and finally some elements of the structure contribute towards the heat source which raises the air temperature to a point where everything bursts into flame and it is known as flashover. Structural fires r individuallying flash point atomic number 18 almost impossible to control and often lead to structural failure. Structure Types Structural fires argon classified as per type of structures, depending on their external and internal composition of construction materials. Since every material ruin with a different rate and in turn produces heat as well as smoke. raise up released contributes towards raising temperature of local air, which results in flash over. Every structure has different set of materials and that is why each structure takes different time to reach flash over. The structures be classified into five types with ascending range of burning. Type I consists of structures with steel and concrete used to provide structural strength, making it the most repelling to fires. Type II uses steel to reinforce the structure of the roof, which provides additional support for the structure and in situation delays roof collapse. Type III is ordin ary structures with exterior and interior made of brick and mortar, which ar non-combustible. The interior may also have laminated or fire retardant wooden floors. Type IV is heavy timber structures which rely on timber to reinforce the structure, however, the exterior walls are made from bricks. Type V are wooden structures with wood used to form the basic frame of the structure, as well as, exterior and interior (Dunn, 2013). In simple, structures with steel and concrete, that is Type I and II, are the most resistant to fire as they are capable of handling heat generated for longer durations, whereas, structures with wood, either interior or exterior are sunk at a faster rate, which includes Type IV and V. Occupancy Types Occupancy type involves type of exercise the structure is designed for and therefore, classified accordingly for fire hazards. Structural fires are a result of kind actions and the type of occupancy dictate regulations for a specific structure. Some of the groups among this classification include Assembly, Business, Education and Factories. These groups are subdivided depending on type of activities carried out within the structure. In general, fire hazard increase with increase in the number of occupants within the structure as well as the scope of activity. Factories are more vulnerable to fires than any other group, because, they involve manufacturing and storage. The materials involved are lots more hazardous and chances of fires are much
